it's a joy

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

Pompei Part Two

See the first posts here: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Now back to our action packed tour of Pompei...

This is a good shot of a street that actually had sidewalks. You can't see them, but they actually had small pieces of white white limestone embedded into the sidewalks that would reflect the moon at night. Pompei's version of streetlights, apparently. Also, the streets were made of those large stones and you could actually see the ruts in them made by the chariots.

Another cool thing about the streets were that they had stepping stones across them every once in awhile. I'm standing on one, in case you couldn't tell The streets would often get flooded or muddy and these are how people crossed the street. And chariots and horses could still get through.

Apparently, the Pompites (is that a word?) were short and had short doorways. Or Jerod is just tall...

This is one of my favorite pictures. It just looks so...I don't know...soft. These are some of the fresco paintings that they excavated that were not destroyed. This was a really beautiful house that had fresco's on every wall.

A close-up of one of the fresco's.

This is a close-up shot of one of the city's fountains. It's hard to tell, but it is a face with the mouth being the spout. Jerod calls these close-up shots I do "nose shots"...yeah, I like my nose-shots.

This is a shot of the courtyard of the biggest house in town. It was owned by the "Jones's" of the town.

I'm not sure what this is, but it's pretty with the mountains in the background. I guess I can mention here the fact that some of the richer houses actually had running water in them. 2000 years ago!! They actually had lead pipes running into their house that were fed from an aquaduct under the city. Ca-razy.

This was a mosaic in an entryway of one of the houses. You can's see it very well, but it's a picture of a dog with the words, "Cave Canem" underneath. That translates to "Beware of Dog".

This was another restaurant where the tour guide said they believed that this was the pizza oven!

This was another temple. You can see on the left the while column. That is a functioning sun-dial...which leads me to think that this was a temple of the sun god. Sounds like a good guess...
This was taken right before I fell off a precarious rock and sprained my ankle a bit. I was ok after a couple days, but I was so nervous it would put a damper on our trip. Thankfully, it didn't.

Here is a shot of us in the town square with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. Imagine watching that beast erupt while standing there. NO. THANK. YOU.

Tomorrow, we'll head to Florence!
