Geocaching
Jerod and I have been researching geocaching lately to see if we would be interested in it enough to invest in a handheld GPS. Last weekend at the fair, there was an exhibit on it in the hobby hall that had a guy standing there explaining to people what it was. We went and talked to him and he was SO STOKED about it, it was obvious how addicting this hobby can be. He compared it to meth that promotes exercise and adrenaline rushes, and doesn't rot your teeth or your face. His excitement rubbed off on us and we decided to try it. We borrowed a friend's GPS and decided to give it a go this weekend on our trip to BT to see my parents. I mean, who doesn't love a giant treasure hunt??
This is Jerod documenting our first find!! It was a super easy one, so we decided it was a good one to start with. The log book was hidden in that tiny magnetic key holder that you see in the picture. It was enough of a nibble to make us want to search for another one.
Now, this one was a tiny bit harder to find. After two trips to the site, Jerod's dad finally spotted it. The log book was in this tiny little rubber ducky. "Hey!", you say, "It's bright yellow! How hard can that be to find?" You go try to find it and then tell me how easy it was, ok? Ok. This find got our adrenaline pumping and even though it was getting late, we decided to attempt one more for the day.
This one was SO. MUCH. FUN! It was a literal treasure hunt were you were given the first set of coordinates and then instructed to use clues from there to find the next coordinates and so on. It had a cool Lewis and Clark theme and since I grew up in BT and was familiar with the different L&C sites, that made it pretty easy. The final coordinates led us to the cache, which was an ammo can full of fun trinkets that people had left. We left one of the puppies' tennis balls and we took a little plastic elephant after signing the log book.
So, the end of our first day, we had three finds under our belt and a beautiful sunset to watch over the Yellowstone. How can you beat THAT?
Yeah, so it's a safe bet to say we're hooked. The first thing Jerod did this morning when he got up was get online and try a few more caches we might want to tackle here in Billings. That guy at the fair was right. It's like meth.....for nerds.
